On April 22, 2008 millions of people will celebrate Earth Day - a day that originated in celebration on March 21, 1970 by John McConnell and proclaimed by the City of San Francisco. What inspired Earth Day was McConnell's interest in Space exploration and awareness of the March Equinox (nature's primary day of global equilibrium). Nowadays, the day is celebrated by the United Nations and individuals around the world as a day of connecting with the earth and taking responsibility for it.

Al Gore's "We Can Solve It" Campaign Needs Help

It appears that more and more people are becoming a little skeptical of Al Gore's push for climate protection. The new campaign titled, "We Can Solve It" has touched a nerve with more than one consumer. In fact, many have pointed out that the comparisons in the campaign are not accurate.

AAFA and FIT Sustainability Conference

On  May 29, 2008, The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) is putting on a sustainability conference titled, Sustainability & The Triple Bottom Line: Turning Responsibility Into Opportunity. Speakers include John Wells, President & CEO, Interface Americas John Frazier, Director of Considered Chemistry and ESH, Nike and Innovest. The Conference will also provide opportunity to examine case studies on Hybrid Technologies, Wal-Mart's Initiatives and Green Architectures & Operations.

DuPont Fingered As Top Polluter

Researchers at the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts put out the Toxic 100, a list of the top corporate air polluters. The corporation that took the honours of the biggest polluter was DuPont. The researchers looked at the quantity of pollution released and the toxicity of the chemicals.

Wal Mart Gets Their Green On

Within two years Wal Mart, yes the big box behemoth, will implement numerous sustainability projects. The first to sign onto Cleantech Group Accelerator incubator project is allowing Wal Mart to easily reduce their eco footprint by posting their needs, which are then reviewed by Cleantech clients.

CSR Reporting Workshop in Dubai

Dubai Chamber’s Centre for Responsible Business (CRB) is organising a one-and-a-half-day workshop on CSR Reporting on April 20 and 21. The workshop is meant to be interactive for participants and will teach them the different reporting guidelines such as the AA1000 Framework, the GRI Guidelines, United Nations Global Compact and others. The workshop will also teach participants how to apply those reporting guidelines.
