Everyone buys them and gives them as gifts, and now Target stores have introduced a bioplastic gift card made from plastic called 'mirel'. The plastic is made by Metabolix Inc., a bioscience company working on developing clean, sustainable solutions for plastics, fuels, and chemicals. Finally shoppers have a biobased gift card option that is now available at 129 Target stores across the US.
This new type of bio-based plastic is called 'mirel' and is made from corn that provides a real alternative to the traditional "petroleum-based" current gift cards. The key to 'mirel' plastic is that it truely biodegrades in many different environments including home compost bins, soil, rivers, wetlands, and oceans. Currently there are more than 50 prospects for 'mirel' plastic on more than 70 consumer products, packaging, and single-use disposables. Watch for more "bio-plastic" to emerge as the true alternative to the exisiting plastic used for gift cards, and other plastic products. |
