Heinz Becoming More Green Through Potato Skins Print E-mail

Heinz has done a great job focusing on sustainability and making the company green. Now, it's proposing impressive reductions and creative uses of produce. Heinz' announced that their goal is to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2015. One of the ways that the reduction will occur is by the company converting potato peels into biofuel. Other plans include a 20 percent reduction of energy consumption, water use and solid waste, a 15 percent reduction in packaging, and a 15 percent reduction in the company's carbon footprint and agricultural water use. As well, the company plans to improve their crop production by 5 percent by using hybrid tomato seeds that themselves requires less water, fertilizer, pesticides and fuel to harvest.  

Heinz' also has plans to expand their produce production in China, Egypt and Easter Europe. The company plans to increase local sources of tomatoes thus diminishing the need for the wide transport of tomato paste around the world
