The Milk Roadmap, a plan unveiled by the UK milk industry and government, calls for a decrease in greenhouse gasses, an increase in the use of recycled material and an overall reduction of the milk industry’s environmental impact. Currently, 80% of milk is sold in plastic. The Plan expects a decreased use of virgin plastic materials of 110 million pounds by 2020, and 50% of milk bottles to be made of recycled content.

Anaerobic digestion facilities will be created to take organic waste and biodegradable materials from both food and dairy processing sites, thus reducing landfill gas emissions.

 

By using renewable energy, lessening water consumption and reducing waste to landfills, dairy farms expect a 20-30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to 2020.
