Cuba is using earthworms to reduce carbon emissions and increase agricultural sustainability. Due to economic sanctions on imports, Cuba has been forced to find alternative resources for such items as fertilizers, pesticides & fossil fuels. Vermicomposting, the process of earthworms feeding on compost and depositing their castings deeper into the soil, not only creates highly nutrient rich compost, but also reduces carbon dioxide. As the earthworm population can double in 60-90 days, the worms can be scraped off the top of the compost to be dried and used as a protein supplement for animals.
