Vineet Nayar, CEO of HCL Technologies Ltd., when speaking at the INSEAD Leadership Summit 2008, insists that social responsibility comes from community not isolation. He believes it is up to the individual to make incremental changes and therefore educates his 50,000 employees on the importance of sustainability.
HCL, a leader in global IT services with operations in 18 countries, emphasizes that their company value is the actual interface between customer and employee. Therefore the most important person is the employee.
Understanding the impact large companies can have on the environment, Nayar encourages other leaders and CEO’s to be more accountable to their staff. “That’s a leadership trait. Don’t wait for customers to tell you something. You know it’s good: it’s good for business, it’s good for society, so go in and do it.”
