Iceland's Response To Climate Change |

Iceland - a country full of icecaps, volcanoes and home to 300,000 people has taken climate change seriously and responded with creative initiatives. Global warming has resulted in glaciers melting but has had a positive economical effect on the country. Iceland's hydroelectric industry is booming, producing more energy then every before - a result of the glaciers melting into the rivers. Currently, two thirds of electricity in Iceland is derived from renewable sources.
Tomas Johannesson, a geophysicist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office stated that "People are already now planning for a future that will be different from the past". And not only are the Icelandic people creating innovative ideas for themselves but they are sharing their forward thinking initiatives with other nations. Scientists from Africa to America are taking note of researchers at Icelandic universities while large corporations are teaming up with small Icelandic firms. Read the full story at Reuters |
