Congestion Pricing in Manhattan Print E-mail

Like Singapore and London, Manhattan politicians are trying to implement congestion pricing as a way to reduce the overload of automobiles on Manhattan streets. The proposal put form by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (April 22, 2007) proposes charging $8 for cars to enter Manhattan south of 86th Street and $4 for drives within that zone. The vote on the proposal took place on March 31, 2008 and City Council approved the plan by a vote of 30 to 20. 

However, the plan does have strong opposition. The biggest opposition to the plan comes from the resident's of Manhattan's outer boroughs who worry that they will be the ones paying the majority of the charges. Other concerns expressed include that neighbourhoods near transit hubs will become parking lots so that individuals will not have to drive into the fee zones.
