Green Lobsters in Maine Print E-mail
Monday, 31 March 2008

The Maine lobster industry is well respected and has made grand efforts to set respectable harvesting practices. The lobster fishery has limits on the number of traps it sets and rules about the size of lobsters that can be caught as well as banning catching egg bearing females. However, now the Maine lobster industry is looking to go one step further and become certified with a sustainable eco-label. Linda Bean, owner of Port Clyde Lobster sees the move for certification as necessary, "We're convinced that the demand for Maine lobster will be greatly affected if won't do this," she said. "We'll be out of the loop."

The certification application will go to the London based Marine Stewardship Council who has been encouraging responsible fishing practices since 1997. Fisheries that are seen as sustainable are given the privilege of using the Council's blue eco-label. The label assures consumers that the fish was not caught in any way that was harmful to the ocean. Currently, the Council has certified 26 different fisheries around the world and almost 1200 seafood products carry their blue eco-label.
