Catchword Branding recently compiled statistics on Green names and found some interesting trends. It seems that everyone wants to use the word "green" to describe themselves so much, that trademark filings that incorporated the word "green" jumped 143% between 2006 and 2007 where as the trademark filings for "red" and "blue increased 5% during the same time period. Other names that have become more popular include "eco" and "earth" - they almost doubled in usage, where as words such as "nature", "natural", and "pure" increased in demand by 20%.

The statistics lead Catchword to provide marketers with their top 5 green naming tips:
1. If you are planning on using the word "green" then it must be credible
2. Although the word "green" currently evokes wonderful connotations, soon with its overuse new words will need to be used by marketers to show differentiators
3. If you plan to use the word "green" in your name, then pair it with a second word that is unexpected
4. Look for ways to say "green" without actually saying "green". Just think of the successful brand Seventh Generation
5. Whether you chose to or chose not to use a "green" name, ensure that your packaging is eco friendly and ensure that your logo design and other visual clues show your company's greenness.
