Hydro Ottawa Recognizes Sustainability Efforts of Wal-Mart Print E-mail
Tuesday, 11 March 2008

Wal-Mart Canada has been present with the 'Companies for Conservation' award for the month of March by Hydro Ottawa. The award is to signify the important sustainability efforts that Wal-Mart has been making locally. "Wal-Mart is one of Ottawa's leading retailers when it comes to incorporating environmental best practices into their business," says Rosemarie Leclair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hydro Ottawa Group of Companies. "The thousands of customers that visit their stores on a daily basis also have the opportunity to learn from their efforts."

Examples of Wal-Mart's sustainability practises can be found in the newest store in Ottawa, Trainyards. The store was built last year and features a high efficiency refrigeration system, LED exterior signage system and increased roof insulation. Through the innovative practises, Trainyards has been able to decreased their energy loss by 25 percent and decreased their lighting load reduction by 21 percent. Wal-Mart Canada's Trainyards store manager, Rae-Lynn Steadwell stated,  "As a company, and at the store-level, we're consistently looking at ways to increase what we're doing in the area of sustainability. We're doing our best to create a culture of conservation, among our associates, customers and the communities we serve. We believe that environmental responsibility starts in our backyard and we're deeply committed to "greening" our national business as a whole and our local stores."
