Workers Receive Incentives To Live Greener Print E-mail

We have all heard of various companies becoming greener by reducing their waste and buying carbon credits. However, some smaller companies are approaching the environment in a different manner - they are encouraging their employees to make friendlier environmental choices by giving them incentives. Incentives such as bonuses for purchasing fuel efficient vehicles. One such small company is Topics Entertainment Inc. in Renton, Washington.

Greg James, founder and chief executive of Topics, a DVD and software publisher was tired of seeing his employees drive to work in gas guzzlers, so in 2005 he decided to do something. Mr. James now provides an incentive program to his 55 employees that offers the following:
$1000 to trade in their automobile for one with fewer cylinders
$2500 for buying a hybrid or biodiesel vehicle
$300 for car pooling (per year)
 
Thus far, ten employees have taken part in the incentive and Mr. James estimates that those employees have reduced their gasoline consumption by 2,400 gallons.
