28 Jewellery Companies joined together in the "No Dirty Gold" Campaign which was launched by environment and human rights groups. The goal is for gold to be extracted without causing harm to the surrounding ecosystems, properly disposing of mining waste and protecting the workers' rights. Now, some of those 28 jewelers, including Tiffany & Co., Helzberg Diamonds, Fortunoff, Ben Bridge Jeweler and Leber Jeweler have signed the Bristol Bay Protection Pledge which opposes a gold and copper mine being started in The Bristol Bay Watershed which is the home of world's most productive sockeye salmon fishery and a native rainbow trout fishery.
Although the proposed Pebble Mine would generate an estimated $300 billion in gold, copper and molybdenum it would also produce as much as 76 tons of waste per one ounce of gold.
