College Students Demand Organic Food Print E-mail

If you are a member of Generation Y and in University then you are likely requesting high quality, organic and locally grown food. We have come a long way from my University days when burgers and fries were the staple meal, today it is heritage turkey breast, roasted root vegetables and organic milk for the kids in the dorms. Christy Cook, sustainability coordinator-Southeast region at Sodexho, a $7.3 billion company states, "One of the biggest trends I've seen is people are looking for more locally sourced produce, supporting the community and the farmers." 
 

 

However, although the College crowd is asking for organic and locally grown food, they do not always agree what the terms mean or if they like how the food tastes. For instance, some students think that locally grown is within 10 miles while others believe it means within 150 miles (more accurate). As well, when you eat locally grown items then not all foods are in season all year round ie: strawberries - sometimes students have a difficult time remembering this. Taste also differs when eating locally grown such as organic milk in Florida during onion grass season. Students are becoming more familiar with the variety of flavors of the new locally grown foods but it is taking them sometime to adjust and they still request the old taste from the cooks.
