GM China Goes Green Print E-mail

Shanghai GM inaugurated its Drive to Green strategy. The program covers three areas of operations: developing green products, cultivating green manufacturing systems and embracing a larger green philosophy. The goal of the program is to create better performance cars that use less fuel and emit fewer greenhouse gases. Shanghai GM is also looking at increasing its recycling abilities and have put forth a goal that 95% of all its materials and energy used in manufacturing will be recycled, that they will reduce coal consumption by 35% per car manufactured, and lower total water use and raise water reclamation by 2012. 
  General Motors further announced a commitment of $250 million for their research center in Shanghai in an effort to drive sustainable growth in China.  And they have also announced that they will collaborate with Beijing's Tsinghua University and the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. to create the China Automotive Energy Research Center. The initial project will be looking at bringing together leaders from government, private industry and academia to create a vision for sustainable automotive energy in China.
