Wal-Mart's Packaging Scorecard Takes Effect Print E-mail

As of January 30, 2008 Wal-Mart officially began using its packaging scorecard to rate suppliers on their progress toward developing sustainable packaging. Wal-Mart's goal is for the company's suppliers to decrease packaging by 5% by 2013, the scorecard is used as a decision making tool. Currently, the scorecard is evaluating 97,000 products and 6,371 vendors. "It's important to us that our suppliers see the intrinsic value behind sustainability, both for their business and the environment," said Matt Kistler, Wal-Mart’s senior vice president of sustainability. "We’ve made significant progress throughout the first year of the scorecard and it is a key responsibility of our suppliers to input new products and update packaging changes on an ongoing basis."

The scorecard evaluates sustainable packaging on various metrics including greenhouse gas emissions, product to package ration, space utilization, innovation and the distance materials are transported. Wal-Mart will also continue to work with its Packaging Sustainable Value Network comprised of suppliers, government agencies, academics, trade associations, and NGOs, to refine the methodology behind the calculations in the scorecard.
