Ben & Jerry's has completed the initial pilot of their Social Footprint Method. The Social Footprint Method measures social sustainability performance against standards of performance. According to The Center for Sustainable Innovation this is a true triple bottom line measurement. The results of the pilot are posted online in Ben & Jerry's 2006 Social and Environmental Assessment Report, in a special section entitled Global Warming Social Footprint.
The initial pilot of Ben & Jerry's focused on the company's contributions towards reversing climate change. So, what was being measured was to what extent Ben & Jerry's is contributing towards returning greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to safe levels? According to The Center for Sustainable Innovation, "To reverse climate change, an effective mix of human, social, and constructed (or built) capital is required so as to make related solutions (i.e., collective action) possible”. Then “... such capitals can then be allocated to any company as its own standard of performance.” Read the full story at Environmental Leader |
