A Third Wave of Green Consumerism |

There is recent talk about a third wave of Green Consumerism. The first wave occurred 20 years ago with discussions over the ozone layer. The second occurred only 15 months ago with Al Gore's promotion of An Inconvenient Truth. The third started when the climate talks ended in Bali. It appears that companies are getting ready for a launch of more green and / or sustainable products. Jon Dee, Planet Ark's founder advised that just the other week had been received a call from two "major household name retailers" asking what they could do on climate change. Ark was clear that "Those sorts of calls would never have taken place pre-ratification [of the Kyoto Protocol]".
Australia anticipates that there will be a rise for the demand of green products and services. Green home loans and government rebates are anticipated to increase sales of solar hot water systems, rainwater tanks and water recycling systems. As well, they predict an increase in renewable energy sourced from wind, water, waster and / or the sun. In fact, Origin Energy which currently has 200,000 GreenPower customer (1/3 of the market) anticipates doubling its customer base within the next year.
