A year ago, S.C. Johnson implemented a pilot program that optimizes their fleet efficiency by taking a close look at every truckload that leaves its facilities. The program titled the "Truckload Utilization Project" is a comprehensive logistics operation that aims to send out fully loaded trucks in the best configurations possible as a way of maximizing each truck's carrying capacity and shipping route. The result in one year has been a savings of $1.5 million and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 2,000 tons.

How was S.C. Johnson able to accomplish this? They achieved a balance between maximum capacity and maximum weight, which enabled the company to ship the same amount of products while using fewer trucks. As Pat Penman, director of Global Environmental & Safety Actions at S.C. Johnson accurately phrased it, "Loading a truck may seem simple, but making sure that a truck is truly 'full' is a science".
