Subway's Diet: Less Oil, More Recycling Print E-mail

ImageThe Subway sandwich chain is testing recycling bins, switching its napkins, cutlery and plastic cups and cutting down on the gasoline used to transport its restaurant supplies in an effort to minimize the chain's impact on the environment. Subway is testing the new initiatives at an ‘eco-store’ it opened in Florida.

In addition to recycling, the store was constructed with some recycled materials and uses more efficient heating and cooling systems, has plumbing that conserves water, and high-efficiency lighting.

Major restaurant chains in North America have been slow to react to the sustainability movement. No other major chain, including McDonalds, Burger King, and Wendy’s said it offered recycling bins for its customer trash. If Subway can make recycling bins work it could prompt other chains to offer them too.  Read the full article at The Wall Street Journal
