With so many companies claiming green, it’s important for the consumer to look more closely and sift out greenwashers. The corporate world has begun to see green as gold and suddenly everyone wants a piece of the pie. The problem is that not everyone wants to clean their dish when they’re finished.
Consumers should be particularly wary about carbon offsetting. Buying carbon credits is an easy band-aid solution that should only be a last resort for legitimate programs. Many companies are changing nothing in their operations and buying carbon credits to market themselves as green. Truly sustainable companies are approaching the issue from the core – improving efficiencies, reducing waste and generally involving the environment in everything they do.
