Wal-Mart is opening a second generation High-Efficiency store in Romeoville, Ill with estimates that it will use 25 percent less energy than a conventional Supercenter. The new store is built upon technologies and lessons from the company's two original High Efficiency Stores (McKinney, Texas & Aurora, Colo) which use 20 percent less energy than conventional Supercenters. The energy savings can be attributed to the combination of a new secondary refrigeration loop and advanced water-source heating, cooling and refrigeration system. |

HP has announced the publication of guidelines designed to help multinational companies achieve sustainability throughout their supply lines. The guidelines came out of a report written by the Danish Commerce and Companies Agency looking at the impact multinationals can have on the standards in their supply chains. The guidelines are based on the findings of the study which focused on 1) a study of the sustainable supply chain management practices of the multinational information technology corporation Hewlett-Packard (HP), 2) on-site assessments of the social and environmental practices of SME suppliers in HP’s supply chain in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland... (15 countries) 3) capability-building activities aimed at the SME suppliers. |

The FTC which regulates advertising claims just completed its first workshop on green advertising. The focus of the workshop was where the money that has been provided for carbon offset credits is going. It is estimated that last year $54 million was spent on carbon offset credits but ensuring green programs are being run properly is quite difficult. As Deborah Platt Majoras, chairwoman of the commission stated, with the rapid growth of green programs “there’s a heightened potential for deception”. |

Covalence's ethical quotation system out of Geneva is based on data stemming from 45 different environmental criteria, everything from labour standards to waste management and environmental impact of production. The influential survey acts as a barometer of how multinationals are perceived in an ethical context. This year, Unilever came out on top in the overall category which assessed companies performance from 2002 to 2007. Toyota and HSBC came in second and third respectively. |
