College Students Demand Organic Food

If you are a member of Generation Y and in University then you are likely requesting high quality, organic and locally grown food. We have come a long way from my University days when burgers and fries were the staple meal, today it is heritage turkey breast, roasted root vegetables and organic milk for the kids in the dorms. Christy Cook, sustainability coordinator-Southeast region at Sodexho, a $7.3 billion company states, "One of the biggest trends I've seen is people are looking for more locally sourced produce, supporting the community and the farmers."

Green Moms Feeling Eco-Anxiety

Women have always been on the forefront of making sure their husbands, children and homes are safe and well cared for. But these days, moms that are focusing on being green can also be facing eco-anxiety. It seems that there are moms out there that are consumed with being green and feel tremendous guilt at splurging or wasting resources. Women are gathering for eco-mom parties where they discuss the "to do" list, things such as preparing waste free school lunches, lobbying for green building codes, obtaining only locally grown foods and ensuring that their cars do not idle when picking up the kids from school (that is if they have to drive).

The Green Gardener's Guide

The book is full of common sense tools to help us protect the resources that give us life. Lampl'l book helps gardeners of all sizes reduce their environmental footprint by providing tips on conserving resources, promoting healthy plant growth and preventing unnecessary damage to the earth. As Lamp'l states "There are millions of gardening and landscape enthusiasts. The powerful impact we can have on the environment through a handful of simple acts is astonishing".

Land Rover Turning Green

Land Rover is working hard in it's marketing department to push its green credentials, even taking out full page press ads. Land Rover which manufactures solely 4x4 vehicles has come under scrutiny from green groups and now the company is working even harder to show they can be green. There is even consideration of launching a battery powered version of Land Rover's Freelander 4x4.

The Green Initiative Fund at UC Berkley

UC Berkeley is so concerned with the environment that it has put together the Green Initiative Fund (TGIF). TGIF has approximately $170,000 a year to grant students, staff or faculty who propose projects that will increase UC Berkley's energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The projects are selected for funding by a the Grant Making Committee (annually appointed) that is comprised of students, faculty and staff. Applications are available online until March 15, 2008.

Design Inspired by Nature

Biomimicry, design inspired by nature is becoming more common. In fact it's becoming a core sustainability strategy for organizations looking at reducing their ecological footprints. The term, biomimicry was coined by Janine Benyus who completes research for the nonprofit Biomimicry Institute and the for profit innovation consultancy, Biomimicry Guild. She also wrote the 1997 book, Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature which was the force behind the movement.
