If you own a green car, the toll agencies are happy to give you a discount reports the New York Times. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers $2 off their E-ZPass and The New York State Thruway Authority offers 10% off their E-ZPass only to owners of Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid and Honda Insight cars. The thruway authorities report that so far they have issues 1,240 green tags out of 2.3 million tags issued over all. |

Coca-Cola's bottler, Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company has reached an agreement with ContourGlobal that will see the building of 15 combined heat and power plants built in Europe by the end of 2009. The facilities will be in Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Greece, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Ukraine, Serbia, Russia, Romania, Italy and Nigeria. Coca-Cola estimates that each plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent. |

It’s a little overwhelming reading a gloomy doomsday climate change report. Possibly the information itself is creating a culture of repetitive failure. However, environmental practitioners must not be overwhelmed into giving up after reading such dreary information. Climate Code Red – The Case for a Sustainability Emergency suggests the dangers of a rising temperature are imminent. The authors write, “It is no longer a case of how much more we can "safely" emit, but whether we can quickly enough stop emissions and produce a cooling.” But the biggest climate challenges society faces are political motivation, not personal. Unfortunately, political will, according to Climate Code Red, is unable to cope with the climate crisis. |

Seattle is home to the new Green Microgym, started by Adam Boesel and inspired by a gym in Hong Kong. Mr. Boesel is striving to, “(lay) the groundwork to build a gym that [is] exclusively powered by a combination of solar and pedal electricity while being just as comfortable and effective as any other gym.” In fact, by connecting the spinning bikes to wind generator motors the clients at the gym are already generating enough electricity to power the gym's music system or run their own personal DVD player. |
