Making a Green Sweep Cleans Up

ImageMakers of "green" laundry detergent, dish soap and other home-spiffing products are cleaning up.

Sales of cleaning products labeled natural — such as those made with vegetable- and fruit-based ingredients — have steadily risen as consumers have become more chemical-phobic.

Among recent high-profile promoters of limiting exposure to toxins is renowned heart surgeon and The Oprah Winfrey Show health guru Mehmet Oz. He and co-author Dr. Michael Roizen caution consumers to steer clear of chemical cleaners in the latest book, out Oct. 30, in their healthy living "You" series.

Nokia Siemens Sees Profit in Energy Savings

ImageOAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 22, 2007 -- Nokia Siemens Networks plans to cut energy consumption at some mobile base stations, saving both power and money.

The telecommunications company announced this week its goal to drastically cut energy use at base stations, which send and receive cell phone signals, by 2010 by adding new technology and software.

To save energy, sections of base stations could turn off or enter power-saving modes when network traffic is low, typically at night.

Subway's Diet: Less Oil, More Recycling

ImageThe Subway sandwich chain is testing recycling bins, switching its napkins, cutlery and plastic cups and cutting down on the gasoline used to transport its restaurant supplies in an effort to minimize the chain's impact on the environment. Subway is testing the new initiatives at an ‘eco-store’ it opened in Florida.
