Coke Sets Goal of Recycling All Bottles Sold in U.S.

Coca-Cola has expressed their desire to be more "green" by focusing on recycling of their Coke bottles. Coca-Cola is planning on building a $45 million plastics recycling plant in South Carolina setting the company's goal as having every bottle it sells in the U.S. either recycled or reused. Currently, the company estimates that approximately 10% of its plastic bottles are recycled.

Being Green Impacted Holiday Spending and Shopping Habits

The 2007 Annual National Shopping Behavior Survey by the audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG LLC,  came out with a clear report that consumers were thinking about the good of their planet as well as global manufacturing issues when they were spending their money this holiday season. The survey showed that 88% of the consumers surveyed were concerned about the environment and that 74% of them buy environmentally friendly products.

Unilever on top of Ethical Reputation Index

Covalence's ethical quotation system out of Geneva is based on data stemming from 45 different environmental criteria, everything from labour standards to waste management and environmental impact of production. The influential survey acts as a barometer of how multinationals are perceived in an ethical context. This year, Unilever came out on top in the overall category which assessed companies performance from 2002 to 2007. Toyota and HSBC came in second and third respectively.

Green Marketing has been quite successful using traditional advertising however it is likely that marketing will take on a new form in the use of "citizen marketers". Citizen marketeing is also known as peer to peer marketing - a way of having regular people push their brands, products, services and companies onto their friends and peers. A type of evangelism. Citizen marketing has proven to be quite effective and in the green world allows companies to avoid accusations of greenwashing as they are not advertising but instead their "brandgelists" are spreading the message.

However, a recent survey by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship shows that executives are disconnected from what they are saying and what they are doing. A New Eco-Friendly Plastic

Metabolix began as a bioscience company in the 1990's that experimented with genetic testing in order to create cleaner industrial products. Now, Metabolix is creating Mirel natural plastic. Derived from corn the plastic is able to breakdown to its basic elements of carbon dioxide and water by itself regardless if it is in land or in water. The natural plastic is made by a special engineered bacteria that is referred to as "bugs". The bugs eat corn sugar until they die from obesity but the bugs "fat" (85-95%) is byweight polymer also known as microscopic plastic. The bacteria is then cooked to extract the plastic which is compressed to form pellets, sheets or thin film.
