Apple's Green Approach

Apple has been hard at work focusing on software upgrades (instead of hardware) in the their Apple’s iPhone, Apple TV and iPod Touch and thus helping to make the world a little more green. How so? Well, software generates no landfill waste, no heavy-metal poisoning and no toxic clouds. Apple is not the only company that is becoming more green but it is the one doing the best marketing. Even Greenpeace is supporting their innovation. When Steve Jobs of Apple introduced MacBook Air at Macworld, Greenpeace commented on their website that, ,“This time Steve is on the right path for a green Apple,” and  "The MacBook Air is a strong entry in the race to build a green PC. As a mercury and arsenic free laptop it exceeds European Standards (RoHS directive exemptions) and raises the bar for the rest of the industry. The BFR and PVC free printed wiring on the motherboard is a big step forward...".

Google Philanthropy to Focus on Environmental Initiatives

Google has revealed how it plans to spend $175 million in philanthropy over the next three years. Google plans to use a large portion of the money towards environmental initiatives and again confirmed their commitment to development of renewable energy sources that are cheaper and cleaner than coal. Google will invest $10 million into eSolar, a California company specializing in solar power. Grants will also be given to accelerate the commercialization of plug-in vehicles.

Electronic Recycling Company Launched

Panasonic Corporation of North America, Sharp Electronics Corporation and Toshiba America Consumer Products have joined to create a new electronic product recycling management company. The company titled, Electronic Manufacturers Recycling Management Company will provide a recycling service to electronics manufacturers. The company has already entered into recycling agreements with  Hitachi Electronics, JVC, Mitsubishi, Philips, Pioneer, Sanyo and Olevia brand maker Syntax-Brillian.

Chrysler Finds New Use for Paint Waste

Chrysler has partnered with Ameren Corp.'s Meramec plant to turn it's paint waste into an alternative fuel. The 855-megawatt plant is the only facility in the U.S. to burn automotive paint solids to generate electricity. Chrysler estimates that last year it's two St. Louis assembly plants sent a million pounds of dried paint solids to landfills.

Wal-Mart to Open Energy-Efficient Supercenter

Wal-Mart is opening a second generation High-Efficiency store in Romeoville, Ill with estimates that it will use 25 percent less energy than a conventional Supercenter. The new store is built upon technologies and lessons from the company's two original High Efficiency Stores (McKinney, Texas & Aurora, Colo) which use 20 percent less energy than conventional Supercenters. The energy savings can be attributed to the combination of a new secondary refrigeration loop and advanced water-source heating, cooling and refrigeration system.

UK Banks Failing to Plan for Environmental Sustainability

A recent study surveying 50 senior executives in the UK conducted by Datamonitor and commissioned by BT Global Services found that UK banks are failing to use technology effectively to improve environmental sustainability. The study found that 94% of financial institutions (with more than 500 employees) believe that sustainable practices are important and further 90% of them believe that IT has a role to play in increasing their sustainability. However, only 51% of them actually has a proper plan to utilise technology to help their organisation become more sustainable.
